I love to make things and I love projects, so when I saw the book 365: A Daily Creativity Journal: Make Something Every Day and Change Your Life by Noah Scalin I was intrigued. The idea is simple – decide on a project theme and create something every day for a year using your theme. It’s long-term so you end up with something big; but it’s broken down into small parts that can and must, according to the “rules’ of the game, be completed in a day. Truly brilliant!
My current creative passion is mosaics. I started taking a class last September and was immediately addicted. I love that the combination of materials, designs and types of projects is virtually endless. I tend to start a new craft and get bored with it once I learn the technique and explore its limits. Mosaics is like learning a new craft with every project. Creating a mosaic piece every day for a year will only scratch the surface of possibilities.
Ok, so I had the big picture in mind, a mosaic a day, but I needed the details. I wanted to set boundaries for myself to ensure success. I decided that it would be reasonable to create a 4″ x 4″ mosaic every day. It’s small enough that it should not take more than an hour (I’m actually planning on 1/2 hr a day but I tend to under-estimate), but big enough to achieve a satisfying design. Mosaics have to be grouted, though. I knew that creating the mosaic and grouting every day would be way too big a committment for me. Ah, but what if I set aside one day each week to grout all the 4″ x 4″ pieces from the previous 6 days. I could do that. On the 7th Day I Grouted was born!
A project this big has to be shared so the blog emerged. I hope you’ll enjoy seeing each new mosaic and reading my thoughts about the big project and the detail of each day’s creation Please send me encouragement when I doubt I can make a new mosaic every day for whole year. Most important, I hope you’ll be inspired to create in whatever medium you love. Maybe not with a project each day but as often as works for your life. I’d love to hear your thoughts so we all learn and are inspired by each other.
On the 7th Day I Grouted starts on Monday, July 30th, 2012 – Deep breath and drum roll, please.
